April 2020 Report by Susan Beinart

WAVERLEY WRITERS OF FOWL REPORT to FOWL (Friends of Waverley Library) COMMITTEE, April 2020

Dear all: Due to recent (ongoing?) changes to the FOWL schedule, I intend to continue to present this report bi-monthly. Please note that because of the temporary closure of Waverley library and the resultant delay of the Friends’ 2020 AGM, FOWL is not presently active.

Waverley Writers of FOWL held its 53rd and 54th meetings on the 3rd Sundays of February and March from 2-4 pm in the Theory Room in Waverley Library. There were 5 participants at the February meeting, and 8 at the March meeting, both of which were convened by Anne Skyvington.

During these sessions, all participants presented writing. Throughout our total of 4 hours together, we shared 8 novel excerpts, 4 memoir pieces and 1 poem. As always, we offered positive and constructive feedback.

We held our second meeting, which was on Sunday 15th of March, under the cloud of the coronavirus pandemic. At that stage, Randwick Writers’ Sharing Writing Skills, just published by Ginninderra Press, had been booked in at Waverley Library for an April launch. Some Waverley Writers, having co-authored this book, wishfully publicised the launch, despite already feeling that it might not go ahead. (Note: Sharing Writing Skills by Randwick Writers’ Group is available on the Ginninderra website and also via online booksellers such as Amazon. A virtual launch is being planned.)

Realising, too, that our Waverley Writers’ meetings could also close down, we asked members how they wished to proceed. Most said they would like to exchange pieces of writing via email. Though Zoom and Skype were mentioned, some felt that they didn’t have the technical know-how required for these tools.

This view was further corroborated via emails from members. So we worked out a modus operandi to accommodate everyone. Here is what we—Anne and Susan—have committed to do:

For those of you who wish to participate, please send, as an attachment, the poetry or prose that you are working on—of up to no more than one thousand words if possible—to Anne’s email address by Friday10th April. Susan and Anne will divide these email addresses and the excerpts into two groups for more manageable feedback. We will then both send on attachments to participants in each of the two groups. (Note Anne’s email address: anne.skyvington@gmail.com)

So this is where we are. Like most of the world, Waverley Library has shut. But we can keep going in a different way. If you wish to participate in our excerpt-sharing effort, please email your piece to Anne by Friday10th April. We aim to get back to you in time for you to submit your feedback before Sunday19th April, our next ‘meeting’ date.

Regards and STAY WELL,

Susan Beinart (Liaison Waverley Writers of FOWL)

Thanks for this detailed—compiled under exceptional circumstances—report, Susan.

Anne Skyvington (Convenor)
