July 2019 Meeting Report by Susan Beinart

WAVERLEY WRITERS OF FOWL REPORT to FOWL (Friends of Waverley Library) COMMITTEE, July 2019

Waverley Writers of FOWL held its 47th meeting on the 3rd Sunday of July from 2-4 pm in the Theory Room in Waverley Library. There were 6 of us there. We were pleased to welcome another new member to the meeting, which Anne Skyvington convened.

During this session, all 6 members presented writing. The pieces were, as usual, of a high standard. Printed copies for the group to read while listening are always helpful for comprehension and feedback. We heard 3 novel excerpts, a short story, the start of a memoir and a poem. We also enjoyed a second presentation by Anne Skyvington aimed at those who are considering self-publishing. Feedback was consistently positive.

At the start of the meeting, we discussed the importance of supporting FOWL functions. It is via FOWL, after all, that we receive a free room for our monthly meetings. Members were therefore encouraged to attend the Walter Mason talk on Dickens’s Oliver Twist on Sunday 28th July ($5), and, in addition, Susannah Fullerton’s talk on Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca on Sunday 22nd September ($10), both at 2pm in the Waverley Library Theatrette. Both presentations are expected to be excellent.

Members were encouraged to check that their FOWL membership, renewable at the start of each calendar year, is up to date.

The second publishing presentation by Anne Skyvington looked at self-publishing via Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). During her earlier presentation (last month), she had outlined her personal journey to self-publication, which included the danger of pitching your manuscript to publishers before it is ready. In this talk, she focused only on self-publishing via KDP. This included details about the KDP website and how to go about using this method, which Anne did successfully when she published her novel Karrana as an ebook. Her presentation also included details such as royalties, establishing an ISBN, plus how to go about pricing eBooks and paperbacks via this method.

If you missed Anne’s talk at this July meeting, you will have another opportunity to hear it when she presents an Author/Self-publishing book talk at a future session at Waverley Library. We will keep you posted.

Waverley Writers’ next meeting will take place on Sunday 18 August 2019, from 2-4 pm in the Theory Room in Waverley Library. We are hoping to see you there.
