The June 2019 Report for FOWL

WAVERLEY WRITERS OF FOWL REPORT to FOWL (Friends of Waverley Library) COMMITTEE June 2019

Waverley Writers of FOWL held its 46th meeting on the 3rd Sunday of June from 2-4 pm in the Theory Room in Waverley Library. There were 9 writers present in the room. We were pleased to welcome a new member to the meeting, which Anne Skyvington convened.

During our June session, all 9 participants presented writing. The pieces were, as usual, enjoyable and polished. We considered a suite of 4 sparkling poems; a poignant, yet amusing article about power outages in the new South Africa; an intriguing short story, plus 4 high-value novel excerpts. We also enjoyed a helpful presentation aimed at those who are considering their publishing options. Feedback in all cases was positive.

The publishing options presentation, given by Anne Skyvington, provoked much interest. She outlined her personal journey to self-publication, which included the danger of pitching your manuscript to publishers before it is ready. Anne did not initially realise that she required more overall direction in order to successfully complete her novel, Karrana. She needed help with her structure. Eventually she found the right person to guide her. In her case, this was a manuscript assessor at Writing NSW. After this expert guidance, it took Anne another 6 months ‘to fill in the missing gaps and to cut out unnecessary bits of the manuscript’.

Anne revealed that, though she has been keeping a craft writing blog for many years (Anne Skyvington: The Craft of Writing), in which she researches and posts on the strategies required for writing longer works, she had to discover through ‘costly experience’ the error of showing one’s work too soon.

As we’ve mentioned before, Anne has published Karrana in the form of an e-book. We will let you know when and where Karrana will be available when Anne has finalised current corrections. Anne has also been asked to give an Author/Self-publishing book talk in the library to take place at a later date. We will let you know.

Waverley Writers’ next meeting will take place on Sunday 21 July 2019, from 2-4 pm in the Theory Room in Waverley Library. We are hoping to see you there.

Regards

Susan Beinart (Liaison Waverley Writers of FOWL)
