WAVERLEY WRITERS OF FOWL REPORT to FOWL (Friends of Waverley Library) COMMITTEE, May 2019
Waverley Writers of FOWL held its 45th meeting on the 3rd Sunday of May from 2-4 pm in the Theory Room in Waverley Library. Many members were away on the day, so we were pleased to welcome 6 people to the meeting, which Dina Davis (in lieu of Anne Skyvington) convened.
Owing to the Easter weekend public holiday, we did not hold a meeting in April.
During our May session, all 6 participants presented writing. As usual, the pieces were of a high standard. We heard 5 fine novel excerpts and one amusing article about a procrastinating writer. Feedback was spirited and positive.
We also discussed a new publication that has occurred in our group. Anne Skyvington has just self-published her novel Karrana in the form of an e-book. Hopefully there will be paperbacks available later on. Many of us will recall the excerpts from this novel that Anne presented for feedback during our meetings. The latest on Karrana is that Anne is planning to make minor corrections to the book and then to re-upload it to Amazon. It will be unavailable for a short time during this process. Anne has been asked to give an Author/Self-publishing book talk in the library to take place at a later date. We will keep you posted.
One and a half months ago, in March, some of us attended member Di Alperstein’s launch of her collaborative book, Languages of Sydney: The People and the Passion, published by Candlin and Mynard and aimed at multicultural classrooms. The launch took place at the State Library and consisted of a workshop in which participants filled in silhouettes to denote aspects of their own cultures. It was great that so many of us – 6 – turned up to support Di. Some of us also brought along friends and family members. Di’s workshop, as well as being educational, proved to be great fun.
Waverley Writers’ next meeting will take place on Sunday 16th June 2019, from 2-4 pm in the Theory Room in Waverley Library. We are hoping to see you there. Until then, keep writing!
