WAVERLEY WRITERS OF FOWL REPORT to FOWL (Friends of Waverley Library) COMMITTEE, June 2018
Waverley Writers of FOWL held its 36th meeting on the 3rd Sunday of June from 2-4 pm in the Theory Room in Waverley Library. There were 7 people present at the meeting, which Anne Skyvington convened.
Before starting the feedback session, we discussed our progress concerning FOWL’s 25th anniversary Meet and Greet. From 10am to 12pm on the morning of the 2nd of October 2018, FOWL will be hosting a combined Poetry Group and Waverley Writers’ session. Members of both groups have agreed to present excerpts of their writing, or to get someone else to read their piece.
While discussing this forthcoming event, we agreed that each piece to be presented should take no more than 4 minutes. 10 of our writers have said that they wish to participate. Some of their pieces might take less than 4 minutes, and the poetry group is expected to take no more than 15 minutes in total. Considering that we will need up to ten minutes for introductions, which will include a few words about FOWL’S successful book group, the entire presentation should take about an hour. This will leave our second hour for chatting over tea, which the poetry group has kindly offered to provide.
NOTE: We have agreed to bring our pieces to the September meeting in order to firm up and practise reading them. The (smaller) poetry group will be joining this Waverley Writers’ practice session. If members do not come to the September meeting, and haven’t arranged for another member to read their piece, it will be assumed that they do not intend to present at October’s Meet and Greet.
Some other good news is that two of our members, Cleo and Susan, have contributed pieces to the latest FOWL Deeds. Another member has expressed a desire to do so for the next edition. Hopefully more of us will have a go in the future. It’s always nice to see our words in print!
In addition to these discussions, we managed to fit in another successful feedback session during this meeting. We heard 4 novel excerpts, 1 biographical piece and 1 synopsis. Feedback, as usual, was considered and helpful. We also welcomed a new member, Babette.
Our next meeting will take place on Sunday the 15th of July 2018, from 2-4pm in the Theory Room in Waverley Library. We are looking forward to seeing you at the library then.
