WAVERLEY WRITERS OF FOWL REPORT to FOWL (Friends of Waverley Library) COMMITTEE, May 2018
Waverley Writers of FOWL held its 35th meeting on the 3rd Sunday of May from 2-4 pm in the Theory Room in Waverley Library. There were 8 people present at the meeting, which Anne Skyvington convened.
During our feedback session, all participants presented a single piece of writing for feedback. These included 4 novel excerpts, 1 piece of art criticism, 1 travelogue and two memoir excerpts. It was great to participate in such a varied program. As usual, the standard of writing was high and, as a result, well received.
Before we began the feedback session, we once again discussed the FOWL Meet and Greet to be held on the morning of the 2nd of October 2018. On that day, from 10am to 12pm, FOWL will be hosting a combined Poetry Group and Waverley Writers’ session, followed by tea. Members of both groups will read excerpts of their own poetry and prose, or get someone else to read their piece. This event will celebrate FOWL’s 25th anniversary.
Our members were keen to discuss this forthcoming event. One suggested that each piece to be presented should be short, taking no more than 4 minutes to read. After we timed one of the presented novel excerpts, we realised that each segment would therefore have to be less than 1000 words. As many as 6 out of the 8 writers at the session indicated that they wished to participate in this presentation. If you missed our May meeting but would like to contribute to the program, please let us know as soon as possible.
Anne has suggested that we bring our pieces to the September meeting in order to firm up and practise reading them. Susan will liaise with the poetry group before then.
Our next meeting will take place on Sunday the 17th of June 2018, from 2-4pm in the Theory Room in Waverley Library. We are looking forward to seeing you at the library then.
