WAVERLEY WRITERS OF FOWL – 7th REPORT to FOWL COMMITTEE
Waverley Writers of FOWL held its 7th meeting on Sunday, 16th August, 2-4 pm, in the Theory Room in Waverley Library. There were 10 attendees at this meeting, which meant that we did not have to consider dividing the feedback session into 2 groups. Splitting up the group into 2 parts for feedback is not ideal, our committee has agreed, but it may have to be re-considered.
We received 5 apologies for the meeting, and 5 people wished to read to us. In the end, 4 of us read and received feedback. 1 participant, a new member, was happy to wait until next time because he hadn’t brought any copies of his story with him.
As always, Anne Skyvington convened the meeting, and Dina Davis attended to library and FOWL membership details.
During this meeting, we spent a fair bit of time in sharing our writing needs and aspirations, which the members clearly enjoyed. Some excellent points of advice were given and received.
Since then, we have arranged for writer Patricia Bernard to attend our November 15th meeting, where she will talk to us about how she uses her travel experiences in her books. Hopefully, she will also discuss her pathway to publication, a subject that is always of interest to our members. Thank you to the FOWL Committee for suggesting this!
Our next meeting, a feedback session, will take place on Sunday, 20th September, from 2-4 pm in the Theory Room at Waverley Library.

The following Guidelines for Feedback were discussed by the group before the critiquing session:
- Giving Feedback: Take on the task of critiquing with a positive and helpful intention; read carefully, trying to understand the writer’s point of view and creative goal; consider the genre and the narrator’s purpose in writing.
- Accepting Feedback: Look on your writing as a “product”, once it is “out there”
